CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. It's been widely reported over the last year that ULA parent companies Boeing and Lockheed Martin are considering offloading the rocket business. That's despite the successful debut of ULA's Vulcan rocket in early January, which I assumed would galvanize a sale. In the meantime, I've been curious to understand how ULA's sale is likely to play out. Boeing and Lockheed Martin are, and have been, looking to sell the rocket business for some time.

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. But, when Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman both reported 2023 results this week, it was a different story. For both companies, space was the top segment for sales growth in 2023 — by a wide margin. You'd think with such strong results, space would be a highlight of quarterly earnings calls. But for both Lockheed and Northrop, executives and analysts still only mentioned space in passing.

United Launch Alliance plans to launch the inaugural flight of its Vulcan rocket on Christmas Eve, CEO Tory Bruno told CNBC's Morgan Brennan on Tuesday. The Vulcan rocket for the Cert-1 mission stands at SLC-41 during testing in Cape Canaveral, Florida, on May 12, 2023. ULA's path to the first Vulcan launch faced several delays earlier this year, including the explosion of an engine during testing by its supplier Blue Origin, previously reported by CNBC. Following the incident, Bruno told CNBC in a "Manifest Space" podcast interview that the company still planned to fly its heavy-lift rocket by late 2023. The company added a massive contract to launch Amazon's Kuiper satellites to its previously government-heavy backlog for Vulcan.

Even ULA's details about the launch are limited, with the info provided comparable to when the rocket company flies classified spy satellites for the U.S. government. watch nowLast year, Amazon announced the biggest corporate rocket deal in the industry's history to launch Kuiper satellites, signing launch contracts with ULA, Arianespace, and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin. As part of that deal, Amazon expects to pay about $7.4 billion for Kuiper launches over the next five years. Amazon is playing catch up to SpaceX, which has grown its Starlink satellite internet service to more than 2 million customers. This year Amazon revealed a trio of satellite antennas that it plans to sell to Kuiper customers.

United Launch Alliance still plans to fly its heavy-lift Vulcan rocket by late 2023 — despite suffering a mishap earlier this year after an engine exploded during testing. CNBC previously reported that one of Blue Origin's BE-4 engines, ordered for ULA's second Vulcan rocket launch, detonated last month. United Launch Alliance, the joint venture of Lockheed Martin and Boeing , is one of two key launch partners for the satellite project, in addition to Jeff Bezos-backed Blue Origin. Once United Launch Alliance successfully conducts its first two Vulcan missions, the U.S. Space Force will consider clearing the heavy rocket for national security launches.

MEXICO CITY, July 27 (Reuters) - Mexico plans to offer 6.5 billion pesos ($390 million) to U.S. construction company Vulcan Materials for land it holds in the southeast of the country, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Thursday, in a bid to resolve an ongoing dispute. Since then, Vulcan has been unable to export its production and is demanding over $1.5 billion in compensation from the ICSID. "We did an appraisal (...) and it has a value of around 6,500 million Mexican pesos ($386.99 million)," he added, noting the intention to buy all the company's 2,400 hectares (5,930.5 acres) in the area. Lopez Obrador previously proposed the company convert its operation, in the Caribbean state of Quintana Roo, into a tourist development with a port for cruise ships. CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. Let's get into that, especially in light of the recently unveiled explosion of a BE-4 rocket engine during Blue Origin's testing in Texas. The engine was bound for the second launch of its customer United Launch Alliance's Vulcan rocket. It's worth understanding the three main phases of rocket engine testing: Development, qualification and acceptance. I don't report on every rocket engine that blows up.

A test of a BE-4 engine at Blue Origin's Launch Site One facility in West Texas, Aug. 2, 2019. A Blue Origin rocket engine exploded during testing last month, CNBC has learned, a destructive setback with potential ramifications for the company's customers as well as its own rocket. "No personnel were injured, and we are currently assessing root cause," Blue Origin said, adding that "we already have proximate cause and are working on remedial actions." Blue Origin also said it will be able to "continue testing" engines in West Texas. "We will be able to meet our engine delivery commitments this year and stay ahead of our customer's launch needs," Blue Origin added.

Vulcan Materials shares should see a better year as inflation cools, according to Goldman Sachs. Analyst Jerry Revich upgraded the construction stock to buy from neutral. And unit profitability, which he said is a key stock price driver, should accelerate as inflation stabilizes but prices remain elevated. While private construction spending is tied to the U.S. banking sector, he said aggregate volumes are down around 10% compared with the same period a year ago. And public construction spending should be strong, he said, as pent up demand from Covid years turn to contracts, he said.

REUTERS/Paola ChiomanteMEXICO CITY, March 20 (Reuters) - U.S. construction materials company Vulcan Materials (VMC.N) said on Monday Mexican security forces illegally took possession last week of its port terminal in southern Mexico, amid an extended lawsuit over its nearby limestone mining activities. It follows a 5-year fight with the Mexican government over Vulcan's concessions punctuated by sharp criticism from the country's president last year. Vulcan declined to say how last week's action was illegal or who is currently in control of its terminal.
From left: Artist renderings of the launches of an RS1 rocket and a Vulcan rocket. Amazon is swapping rides for the first prototype satellites for its Project Kuiper internet network, the company announced on Wednesday, a move that delays launching the pair of spacecraft to early next year. Instead, the Amazon satellites will hitch a ride on the first launch of ULA's Vulcan, which is planned for the first quarter. Amazon isn't ditching ABL entirely, however, saying it plans to retain two launches with the rocket company for future missions. He also emphasized that ABL has a backlog of missions from customers including the U.S. Space Force and Lockheed Martin.
WASHINGTON, Oct 10 (Reuters) - United Launch Alliance has pushed the debut launch of its new Vulcan rocket to early 2023 at the request of one of its customers, the company's chief executive said, further delaying a benchmark mission crucial to the Boeing-Lockheed joint venture's launch business. Vulcan, a roughly 200 foot-tall rocket in the final stages of development, will be the centerpiece to ULA's launch business. Vulcan, priced at roughly $110 million per launch, already has some 80 contracted missions lined up. It will compete with SpaceX's Falcon 9, priced roughly $62 million per launch, and Blue Origin's forthcoming New Glenn rocket, which uses the same engines as Vulcan. If Astrobotic's lander is delayed beyond Q1 2023, ULA would replace it with a pickup truck-sized dummy payload in order to meet the narrowing window of time to demonstrate Vulcan for the Space Force.
